The social bases of Integralism

This paper is concerned with the reasons of part of the Brazilian middle classes for supporting integralism. It begins with an extensive bibliographic review of integralism to assess the documentary data available about the social base of the movement. Following this, an overview is presented of the interpretations that appear in the historiography which use a class-based perspective to explain middle class support for integralism. Finally, three research hypotheses are proposed which intend to give greater depth to current explanations about middle class support for integralism. In conclusion, it is important to recognize the merits of the reading of the historiography which proposes that integralism attracted part of the middle classes as it was an alternative to the oligarchical parties and because it was regarded as protection against communism. However, it should be emphasized that canonical explanations have to be complemented with the following factors: 1) the permanent and pervasive policy of integralism; 2) the material difficulties of the middle classes; 3) the anti-popular feelings of the middle classes.
