Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the episode “Brazilian Dictatorship” of the “Politically Incorrect Guide” produced by the television channel Discovery Brasil, an arm of the Discovery Channel belonging to the Disney Group. The central questions that motivate the analysis are: how the Military Dictatorship (1964-1965) is represented in the episode of the series in question and what are the implications of this representation for the political, economic and social situation of 2017. To this end, we seek to investigate what the aesthetic option used in the audiovisual production, what was the situation in which the production was broadcast, what were the ideological affiliations of the material. The conclusions go in the direction in which the material approaches the dictatorship in an ambiguous way, accepting the dictatorial and inhumane character of the 1964 regime, but relativizing its conclusions with arguments that the dictatorship had positive elements, the main of which was to remove the threat communist. Such arguments also operated to legitimize the political program “A Bridge to the future” implemented by the Michel Temer government.
