This article investigates the impact of the cinematic recording of the Santa Cruz Cemetery Massacre in Dili, Timor-Leste, which occurred in 1991, on the international visibility of the Timorese people's suffering under Indonesian rule. Through a qualitative and documentary analysis, the aim is to understand how cinematic recording serves as a historical source for the analysis of traumatic events. The research is based on personal interaction with Timorese society and bibliographic research as a methodological tool, acknowledging the difficulties in addressing these sensitive topics. Furthermore, it highlights the crucial role of cinema in documenting human rights violations and advocating for justice, especially in contexts of massacres and genocides. The article examines the role of cinematographer Max Stahl in exposing the brutalities of the Indonesian occupation in Timor-Leste, emphasizing how his footage was instrumental in raising global awareness and mobilizing international solidarity that would eventually lead to Timor's self-determination. Additionally, it discusses the challenges and possibilities of audiovisual representation of massacres, emphasizing the importance of balancing multiple perspectives and narratives in a sensitive and respectful manner. The study concludes that cinematic recording not only documented the events but also made them impossible to ignore, contributing to global awareness and the preservation of the victims' historical memory.
