Ana and the “carrancas” of a life
work, migration and art in the the Brazilian hinterland (1923-2023)

The year 2023 is dedicated to the anniversaries and celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Ana das Carrancas. She was a black ceramist from Pernambuco, born in 1923, the same year in which the Law for the Regulation of the Leasing of Domestic Services was enacted in Brazil, in addition to the creation of the National Labor Council. In that same year, several proposals appeared in the State and Municipal Legislative Chambers of Brazil to regulate the labor relations of people who rented their domestic services, having as common characteristics the need to register and the use of a professional identification with criminal repercussions. Supported by Sueli Carneiro's propositions on the racist and misogynistic Brazilian occupational structure, combined with the theoretical assumptions of François Dosse in The biographical challenge (2009), having as sources the labor legislation of the first decades of the twentieth century and the news from newspapers of the last decades of the same century; This article discusses, based on facts and processes concerning the life of Ana das Carrancas, historical parallels that highlight the struggle for work and the social dignity of black women in Brazil during the 20th century.
