Abstract

The interviewee in this edition, Fabiane Popinigis, became in 2018 the coordinator of the Working Group - Worlds of Work. This was created in 2000, with the official registration with the board of the National History Association (Brazil), constituting a meeting space and exchange between researchers from different regions and universities of the country. The central theme of this dossier, the relationship between free and slave labor, has been present from the outset in defining the Working Group's scope and research agenda. Popinigs's choice as an interviewee of this number goes far beyond the fact that she is the coordinator of this group. With a degree from the State University of Campinas, his thesis (awarded in the contest "Various Stories of the Research Center on Social History of Culture") is a study of great impact and relevance on workers in the nineteenth century, which broke a barrier in the historiography of since the investigations generally were limited to the post-abolition period because they considered the development of the working class to be incompatible with the existence of slavery. In investigating the forms of mobilization and organization of the salesman in Rio de Janeiro throughout the Empire and the First Republic Popinigis has recently carried out important reflections on the relationship between workers and the municipal authorities. As a Professor of the Department of History and of the Postgraduate Program in History of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Popinigis has recently made important involve class, race and gender.
