Este ensaio analisa o romance Sexo, de André Sant’Anna, com o objetivo de identificar os padrões retóricos que permitem a produção de efeitos de estranhamento durante a leitura. Argumenta-se que as características da prosa de André Sant’Anna ─ como o uso de lugares-comuns, as repetições e também a construção de um narrador indefinido ─ possibilitam uma resposta do leitor que pode ser compreendida com base no paradigma da performance literária. Por meio de uma leitura atenta de Sexo, defende-se que o romance produz uma perturbação do real, em vez de uma representação fidedigna da realidade.
