This article aims to analyse the emergence and consolidation of a hybrid zone of intellectual legitimacy from the 1940s onwards and the reconfigurations in the very concept of university that the Cold War engendered. This analysis is made taking into consideration the network of liberal intellectuals that grouped around the Mont Pèlerin Society. The suggestion is that this dynamic significantly alters the public meaning of the outsider position, making it positive compared to the classic professoral discourse. The hypothesis is that this change in the evaluative perception of the social condition of outsiders helps us to understand the contemporary dynamics of university criticism and crisis, as well as the emergence of parallel instances of knowledge enunciation, some of them not committed to procedures and scientific methods. In order to compare these two dimensions – one properly historical and the other of a conceptual outlook – I suggest a critical approach to some works by the German sociologist Norbert Elias.
