Abstract

Although the diagnosis of autism has increased in recent years, its prevalence in higher education institutions is still unknown or underrepresented. In the academic environment, neurodiversity is beginning to be discussed in educational bodies, but the existence of professors with ASD is still treated as taboo among higher education professionals. In the areas of exact sciences and engineering, no studies or reports of Brazilian autistic professors and their experiences in these environments are found. This first-person account reflects on the trajectory of a university professor of engineering courses who was diagnosed with autism in adulthood. This report presents the professional's trajectory from the diagnosis process, dissemination to the academic environment, and its impacts. It presents the paths to creating an extension project focused on neurodiversity and the inclusion process in the university environment.
