This work reports the types of actions employed in the development of the project “Interdisciplinary application of basic knowledge in geology in Elementary and High school- in Rio de Janeiro-RJ”, of Geology and Environmental Issues in University-School. The program offers simplified scientific knowledge of Geological education and skills relating to the cross-cutting theme Environment (NCP'S / MEC, National Curriculum Standards, Ministry of Education). The project was developed from 2010 until 2011 by the Department of Mineralogy and Igneous Petrology (DMPI) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), with the participation of teachers from state schools . It aimed to offer practical knowledge of geology, material and methodologies that would introduce geology in disciplines of Elementary and Secondary schools in Rio de Janeiro. The development took place through guidance, methodological training in geology, and subject updating for teachers, with the provision of teaching materials produced by the project.  It also provided extended educational activities to state school students. Particularly, the project consisted in the expressive dissemination of knowledge of the study of rocks and minerals. It included state institutions but also private ones, enabling them to participate in short courses, therefore they have been improved after participation in the experience.
Actions were based on providing teachers with guidance and methods on the application and creation of ways of introducing geology in their subjects: Biology, Sciences, Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, History, and Physics, in an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore several activities were developed: lectures and short courses, both in schools and in UERJ, science fair projects, making of educational material such as rocks and minerals samples, and field studies and formulation of urban geological routes in Arpoador and Urca, Rio de Janeiro, and in the city of Queimados, RJ.
