Securitization of Migration in Contemporary Argentina: The Radical Right, Populism, and Media Framing

This article analyzes the framing of the media agenda on migration policy in Argentina at key moments in its recent history, with particular emphasis on Javier Milei’s digital political communication. The aim is to understand how the securitization of migration is consolidated in line with the repertoires of the transnational populist radical right. Drawing on a qualitative approach, it combines critical discourse analysis and frame analysis applied to political speeches, legislation, news coverage and digital social media content. The study reconstructs the circulation of MAGA-style slogans, punitive aesthetics and security frames grafted onto local narratives. The results show regulatory swings between rights-based and security-oriented approaches, the stabilization of a frame that associates migration with crime and over-represents Latin American origins, and a convergence between the radical right and governmental communication. The article provides evidence to understand the current reordering of public debate on migration in a country historically shaped by immigration.
