Abstract

In Portugal, in the last ten years, it’s possible to apprehend that the luso-tropicalism prevails, as far as racism concerns. The theory of Gilberto Freyre became a flag to the New State Regime (Estado Novo) against the anticolonial movements and the pressure of the United Nations for the colonies independence. This article intends to discuss the latest studies on the subject and to analyze two intellectuals from the first half of the 20th Century. A follower of the regime (Augusto de Castro) and a member of the Opposition (José Norton de Matos).
