Abstract

This article intends to make use of the biographical information about the journalist, literary critic and writer Otto Maria Carpeaux, to outline a framework about the conditions of reception of European refugees in the dictatorial period of the Brazilian Estado Novo (1937-1945). Therefore, especially considering the uniqueness of foreigners who came with wide cultural and intellectual baggage, they enjoyed the recognition of their value by society, finding good reception and spaces for performance, but at the same time they had difficulties with bureaucracy especially those idealized in the context of the immigration restrictive policy.
