Abstract

This work aims to analyze the representations created by the authors of Rio Nu journal (1898-1916), around a subject that was fraught with meaning: the turn of the year. The newspaper was considered pornographic and had the collaboration of well-known writers and cartoonists of Rio de Janeiro. At a time of intense modernization of the city, how the imaginary related to the turn of the year was meant by the authors of the newspaper? Which city rankings were performed on it?? Which horizons of expectation these representations have dialogue with in a period in which the country's capital gathered much of the Brazilian intelligentsia? How these mediations communicate with their audiences, that is, what effects they hoped to provoke? The investigative force considers Rio Nu as a privileged space for the experimentation of modernity.
