Abstract

The centenary of the birth of Jorge Amado, completed in 2012, was a time of great celebration around the writer's memory. Despite this, there were also dissonant voices that sought to highlight ambiguities, contradictions and even negative aspects of his intellectual trajectory. The analysis about these voices revealed political disputes around the memory of Amado, also showing memory battles around characters and parties related to the communist movement. We conclude, therefore, that the celebration or the criticism of Amado’s political and intellectual trajectory is often related to identity groups, or to the position of the deponents in the memory disputes about the communist movement in Brazil.
