Abstract

This article aims to discuss the emancipation movement from the perspective of political and intellectual elites in the capital of the province of Espírito Santo in the last decades before abolition in 1888. It is possible to realize the importance of using the “Ventre Livre” Law as a basic argument in the lawsuits for freedom of slaves. The path for abolition in the capital of Espírito Santo was based on order and legality.
