About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Intellèctus is an academic and scientific journal originating from the activities of the CNPq Research Groups Intellectuals and Power in the Ibero-American World and Intellectuals, Society, and Politics, based respectively at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences and at the Teacher Education Faculty of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Edited by the Laboratory of Intellectuals, Culture, and Politics, the journal is dedicated to publishing original research, historiographical studies, and theoretical-methodological reflections related to the History of Ideas, Intellectual History, and the History of Intellectuals, as well as analyses of cultural production in countries that comprise the universe of “Latinity.” In this sense, the journal addresses the multiple interfaces of this field within the Human and Social Sciences.
Intellèctus accepts for evaluation unpublished and original manuscripts that are not under consideration by another journal. Multiple, redundant, or duplicate publications are not permitted. The journal publishes open-topic articles and book reviews received on a rolling basis, as well as articles submitted to thematic dossiers organized by invited specialists. It also includes an interview section related to its scope. All submissions, except interviews, undergo double-blind peer review, in accordance with the criteria outlined in the Journal’s Code of Ethics and Best Practices, aligned with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Authorship must reflect significant intellectual contributions, encompassing participation in the conception, theoretical development, data analysis, and writing of the manuscript. All authors must approve the final submitted version, as well as any revised versions resulting from reviewers’ comments.
Intellèctus is published exclusively online and has a semiannual publication frequency.
Target Audience
Independent researchers, bachelor’s degree holders, faculty members with institutional affiliations, and undergraduate and graduate students in History and other areas of the Human and Social Sciences, in Brazil and abroad, interested in historiographical analyses and theoretical-methodological reflections related to Intellectual History, the History of Intellectuals, and the History of Ideas.
Compliance with Open Science
Linked to the institutional website of the UERJ Electronic Publications Portal, managed by the UERJ Press (EDUERJ), Intellèctus is committed to current Open Science practices. The editorial team actively participates in national debates—particularly through the Brazilian Association of History Editors (ANPUH)—and international discussions (FOSTER | openscience.eu). The journal adopts transparent management practices and maintains specific policies regarding data sharing and reproducibility.

Open Access Policy
Intellèctus is an immediate open-access journal. All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Peer Review Process
All submitted texts (articles and reviews) must be unpublished, original, and not under evaluation elsewhere. Manuscripts must be anonymized and comply strictly with the journal’s author guidelines.
Submissions undergo a double-blind peer review by at least two external ad hoc reviewers holding doctoral degrees. In cases of conflicting reviews, a third reviewer will be consulted. Final publication decisions rest with the Editor-in-Chief, Assistant Editors, and Editorial Board.
Possible editorial decisions include:
- Accepted (no revisions required)
- Mandatory Revisions (no return to reviewers; evaluated by the Editorial Board)
- Resubmit for Review (substantial revisions required and a new review round)
- Rejected (final decision, no appeal)

Conflict of Interest Policy
Conflicts of interest are understood to potentially compromise the transparency and impartiality of scholarly production or evaluation. They occur when personal, financial, academic, political, or other interests of an author, reviewer, or member of the Editorial Board may influence their judgment regarding the content of an article.
It is the responsibility of authors to identify and disclose any conflicts of interest at the time of manuscript submission. If there is any relationship—whether actual or potential—that may affect the integrity of the work, the author(s) must report it through a signed document attached to the submission platform. Reviewers are required to declare any conflicts of interest before accepting the review of a manuscript. Likewise, members of the Editorial Board must disclose any potential conflicts of interest when participating in editorial decisions regarding submitted articles.
For further information, please visit: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.
Data Sharing and Reproducibility
Authors of articles and book reviews are required to share and report the data used in their research, indicating access links to the consulted sources—including digital copies of manuscripts and early printed materials, online articles, and theses and dissertations available in institutional repositories. The date of access must also be provided in order to facilitate verification and access by readers.
When sharing data, authors are responsible for ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards. Specific permissions and authorizations must be obtained when required.
Sex, Gender, and Race Issues
All participants involved in any activities related to the journal must adhere to the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines provide guidance on the appropriate inclusion and presentation of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, as well as in the presentation and interpretation of results. It is also worth noting that Intellèctus remains attentive to policies of gender and racial equity in the composition of its editorial board. The journal is likewise committed to the principles of IDEIA (Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility), ensuring the implementation of policies that promote inclusion and guarantee accessibility.

Authorship must be clearly defined at the time of manuscript submission. Articles authored by a maximum of four authors will be accepted for publication. In cases of multiple authorship, authors must specify, in the section “Comments to the Editor,” the individual contributions made by each author to the development of the manuscript. When necessary, authors may be requested to further detail their contributions in accordance with the criteria established by the CRediT – Contributor Roles Taxonomy.

Post-Publication Discussion Policies
The length of time since an article’s publication does not prevent the issuance of retractions. At any time, regardless of the publication date in Intellèctus, retractions may be issued if issues related to the integrity of the article or the reliability of the published data are identified or reported.
Retractions, Corrections, Complaints, and Appeals
The editors of Intellèctus are responsible for deciding—when necessary, in consultation with the Editorial Board, other journals, or academic institutions—on reports, complaints, retractions, or corrections related to published content. Journal History
Founded in 2002 by the CNPq Research Group “Intellectuals and Power in the Ibero-American World” and edited since then by the Laboratory of Intellectuals, Culture, and Politics at UERJ, the electronic journal Intellèctus aims to serve as a relevant platform for the dissemination of innovative scientific research on intellectuals and intellectual life in Ibero-America. Since 2004, it has also been linked to the International Colloquia “Tradition and Modernity in the Ibero-American World,” resulting from an agreement between UERJ and the University of Coimbra. Initially held biennially in Brazil and Portugal, these colloquia have been hosted in other countries since 2014, beginning with Spain.
Intellèctus is pioneering not only for being published electronically, but also for having as its main scope the publication of studies on intellectuals, ideas, culture, and intellectual life in Ibero-America. Its Editorial Board and Advisory Board include prominent members of the Brazilian and international academic communities. As an online publication since its inception, articles published in Intellèctus have been accessed by undergraduate and graduate students, Brazilian and international scholars, as well as researchers from different parts of the world. In this way, the journal has become an international reference for researchers directly or indirectly engaged in the study of intellectuals and Intellectual History.
In 2013, the Editorial Committee began to include the participation of the CNPq Research Group “Group of Studies and Research on Intellectuals, Society, and Politics,” also based at UERJ. The journal’s editorial project, submission guidelines, and reference standards were updated in 2014 in order to meet the criteria of major national and international journal indexers. In 2015, Intellèctus began to be published on the UERJ Electronic Publications Portal, using the Electronic Journal Publishing System (SEER) provided by IBICT under the Open Journal Systems platform, contributing to the streamlining of editorial work and to greater visibility.
In 2022, Intellèctus celebrated twenty years of uninterrupted publication, reflecting its position as a consolidated and well-established vehicle for academic dissemination.
