Abstract

This paper aims to establish a relationship between postfunctionalism and populism, anchored by concepts such as politicisation and identity, within the scope of European integration. On the one hand, populism takes on a strong practical nature and intends to distance itself from elitist Europe. On the other hand, postfunctionalism sets populism from a theoretical point of view, which allow us to reflect on the rise of populist parties in contemporary Europe. That said, the article seeks 1) to present the European origins and dynamics of postfunctionalism; 2) to relate postfunctionalism with the concepts of politicisation and identity; and 3) confronting postfunctionalism and populism. One may conclude that postfunctionalism contributes with a theoretical approach to the populism.
