Abstract

Connect the knowledge of Brazilian protected areas to the daily lives of nearby schools should be a priority of formal environmental education. The project "School and the Pedra Branca State Park: an Environmental Education Program for Communities" in development by the Group of Environmental Studies at the State University of Rio de Janeiro - GEA / UERJ, aims to develop, with teachers and students of elementary school, participative teaching practices in Environmental Education, with the challenge of using the principle of environmental conservation as one of the world's readings and connection to the local reality, which is represented by natural resources and forest remnants of the Pedra Branca State Park (PEPB), the largest protected area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Until then, was trained 65 teachers and about 3,000 elementary school students from public and private schools in the way of formation of a network of knowledge and performance in the environmental conservation of the protected area through participatory management. The main activities of the project are: to inform and guide teachers and students about the impacts and environmental and socio-cultural solutions in the protected area; assess the performance of schools selected in the application / use of the teacher's manual in the classroom; and form a network of knowledge and dialogue between the schools and the administration of the PEPB. Was built and is being used in schools, a manual (printed and e-book) with 10 modules of theoretical and practical activities, including equipment and sensory awareness techniques for the visually impaired.
