Abstract

It is proposed to analyze the children's books produced by the North American illustrator, cartoonist and writer Peter Newell (1862-1924) within the scope of graphic communication, considering the book in its materiality (object book, artist's book etc.). The analysis seeks to insert conceptually Newell's work into the context of his production: the modernist era. A reflection is presented on how Peter Newell and his work dialogue with modernity and, more specifically, with the artistic avant-garde and new ways of perceiving art, in the broadest sense. The objective is not to point out whether Newell was (or was not) an artist of the modernist avant-garde; but establishing links with the context of his production contributes to a better understanding of his work. Connections between Newell's work and the concepts of repetition and play are also established.
