Abstract

Kafka’s masterpiece, The Metamorphosis, an important part of the European literary canon, has been appreciated and taken as an object of study over the years. However, in the current context of media mixing, where canonical works are revisited from different perspectives, we have this work adapted into a different format: an electronic game. In this study, we use the theoretical basis from scholars such as Néstor Canclini, Florencia Garramuño and Linda Hutcheon, and we describe the characteristics of the game The Metamorphosis, released in 2020 by Izmir Games Collective, and the challenges of this intermedia adaptation, exploring losses and gains in the adaptation process of this object of study. We observe how the digital narrative allows the player to experience Gregor Samsa’s alienation and anguish in a more immersive and interactive way, by means of the typical resources and limitations of videogames.
