Abstract

This work aims to analyze the edition of Carmilla (2022), by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, published by Wish and Sebo Clepsidra and illustrated by Caroline Murta, in order to demonstrate in which ways the illustrations in the book can generate an experience of fear in the reader. For this purpose, we have based our analysis on the concept of narrative applied to visuality, on the Gothic studies – more specifically the ones about the origin of Gothic tradition and its manifestations in architecture and art –, and also on the studies about literary vampires. We aim to analyze the cover, the back cover, two illustrations and other paratextual elements responsible to enrich the graphic design of the book establishing a relationship between them and the meanings of the story.
