Abstract

The Companhia Folclórica do Rio-UFRJ (Rio-UFRJ Folkloric Company) promotes the annual Meeting with Masters of the Popular Culture at the UFRJ campus. There are parties as well as workshops, debates and the collective construction of a public letter-document which lists demands. Many different groups have already taken part in these annual meetings: among them, the Batuque de Umbigada from Piracicaba, Tiête and Capivari from São Paulo state. These batuque partners have built their long desired Barracão, a place dedicated to the memory of the ancestors as well as the brincantes of today. The visualities do Rio was invited for this inauguration. Mestre Dado warned us: “Better get those legs ready ‘cause we’re going to dance a lot”. And that was just what happened! Mestre Dado and Minerva (the goddess symbol of the UFRJ) had great fun playing together and they will keep on playing!
