Abstract

The procession promoted by the Cathedral of the Parish of Saint Dimas carried through in São José dos Campos (SP) has happened for over 50 years, configuring itself as one of the highest points of the commemoration of the Holy Week in this city – an event which frequently surpasses the established contraposition between the popular religiosity on the streets and the formal religion of the Catholic church. In 2010, the procession was innovative: the stages of the Passion of Christ for the first time were presented in the form of snippets of an American film, in a mobile big screen, with the traditional theatrical representation being restricted to the beginning of the drama, still in the church, and to the moment of the crucifixion, in Public Square. Although it represents a modernization attempt, with the introduction of technological apparatus, the novelty divided opinions: a great part of the participants still prefers the warmth of the live representation.
