Abstract

The changes in the Brazilian Carnival in the 100 years covered by this article are practical examples of the movements of Latin American intellectual history of the period. In search of European references in an attempt to "forge" a national identity, Brazilian intellectuals would use their influence in several areas, including the carnival.
