Abstract

Since the 1930s the samba and, consequently, the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro have become a reference in the appearance and organization of similar cultural events in several parts of Brazil. This article seeks to show the symbolism of the performance of the samba schools in the city of Uruguaiana, on the western edge of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in their interactions with the traditional culture and the singularities of the carnival in the border region.
