Abstract

The article investigates the history of material culture of capoeira in order to understand the process of teaching / learning the game-fight in Rio de Janeiro in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, indirectly promoting a deeper and greaterunderstanding of its contemporary practice as intangible culture and heritage, and its pedagogical processes throughout history. The research focused on the material culture of capoeira based on the analysis of the lithography Jogar capoera or danse de laguerre, by Rugendas. This work unveils preliminarily and partially the complex relationship of subjects who developed the capoeira ways – immaterial culture – with the objects, materials and environments that formed the material culture of the game-fight, and their respective symbologies.
