In the 1970s and 1980s, the North Region had the highest population growth rate in the country (5.02%). According to Brasil (2010), the state of Rondônia was the Federative Unit that obtained the highest growth rate (16.03%), constituting the most important front of population expansion in the country, the colonization of the state of Rondônia highlights the complexity and dynamism of the historical events that shaped the region. In this context, the article reports on the experience of teaching internship in the discipline of Colonization and Geography of Rondônia at the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), in 2024. The teaching internship is mandatory for postgraduate scholarship holders, therefore, the initial dynamic developed by the professor responsible for the discipline consisted of questions about geography and personal and family histories of the academics, encouraging them to reflect about the colonization and the processes migratory in Rondônia. This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, of the experience report type. The postgraduate students/interns systematized this dynamic through a digital form (Google Forms), allowing them to profile the students and their family trajectories in the regional migratory context. The critical and reflective approach aimed to connect the students' individual experiences with regional history, promoting a more comprehensive understanding of the colonization process and the socioeconomic transformations of Rondônia. The results revealed that most students have family origins linked to internal migrations driven by public policies in the 1960s and 1970s. The study highlights the importance of this methodology for the development of students' critical autonomy and the relevance of the teaching internship in the pedagogical training of postgraduate students.
