Traditionally, studies on the spatial distribution of prostitution are carried out on a local scale, generally in the central part of cities. This work analyzes the distribution logic on a broader scale: that of the city. With the aim of identifying the variables that condition the location of prostitution spaces in public spaces. Rio de Janeiro is a case study, one of the main cities in the country that has a historical tradition of housing prostitution spaces since the 19th century. To this end, collaborative mapping was carried out via an online form to locate the activity and fieldwork to validate the information, as well as carry out direct observations. The results show that there are three fundamental variables that condition the location of prostitution spaces in the public spaces in which they are located. They are: the type of road close to the public space where the professional is positioned; the professional’s gender; and the shift (day and/or night) in which the activity is in operation. Therefore, it is concluded that when changing the scale of analysis to observe the distribution of prostitutional spaces, new variables appear in relation to local studies, the only one that remains is the gender variable.
