Abstract

Brazilian geography seeks to understand the production of space through various thematic fragments of reality, but addressing religion still constitutes a challenge. More specifically, investigating spatial dynamics through studies on religious intolerance as an agent of space production. This fact is partly due to the research dynamics that began in the 1970s, when materialist critique became central and class struggle was the focal point chosen by geography to form a way to reconstruct the discipline in a country marked by the civil-military dictatorship. Given this perspective, which became almost hegemonic in the following decades of the 1980s and 1990s, geographies that diverged from this approach became marginal and "forgotten," even being ignored in undergraduate curricula, such as Humanist Cultural Geography. Based on these considerations, in this article, we aim to present a brief profile of the debate on Religion and Geography in Brazil, listing the works that addressed Religious Intolerance in Geography from the CAPES thesis and dissertation catalog. In doing so, we justify why we still believe it is a challenge to discuss space production from the perspective of religion in Geography and to expand the debate on Religious Intolerance.
