Abstract

This article is the result of a meeting between three women who took part in the University Extension Course "Climate Change and the Right to Water in the Metropolis of Rio de Janeiro", held by the School of Social Work at UERJ, in partnership with the Federation of Organizations for Social and Educational Assistance, the Rio de Janeiro branch of the Forum for Climate Change and Socio-Environmental Justice and the Rio de Janeiro Popular Surveillance Network on Sanitation and Health. The article systematizes part of the debates held during the course, which are related to the issue of climate change and environmental racism in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It presents the concept of environmental racism and analyzes its particularities in the reality of Rio de Janeiro based on a case study: the installation of the Ternium steel plant in the Santa Cruz Administrative Region, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the development of a Popular Surveillance initiative in Health and Environment by the Martha Trindade Collective.
