This research analyzed how special insured people deal with the bureaucracy involved in accessing rural retirement, based on a case study in the quilombola community of Vila União/Campina, in the municipality of Salvaterra, in the Marajó archipelago, in Pará. The aim was to understand whether the bureaucratic requirements for access to rural retirement lead to the formulation of local strategies for the realization of the social security rights of these rural workers. The work involved bibliographical and documentary research, as well as participant observation and data collection using questionnaires and interviews in the selected community. The peculiarities of access to rural retirement pensions in Vila União/Campina show how the local reality of the region and the lack of access to information about social security legislation contributes to the subjects having local ways of dealing with and applying for the benefit, even if they do so through actions that escape the requirements of the legal text, but which find legitimacy and meaning in the daily lives of the insured in the community.
