Abstract

Objective: To analyze the urban reality of Curitiba by confronting the discourse of the "model city" with the dynamics of peripheralization and slum formation that shape the urban space. Method: The study is qualitative in nature, and to achieve the research objectives, the following data collection techniques were used: literature review, document analysis, and analysis of secondary data. Results: Although Curitiba is recognized for its innovative urban planning practices, such policies often serve economic and business interests, while vulnerable populations face mobility challenges, housing exclusion, and disproportionate environmental impacts. Public transportation benefits private concessionaires and limits equitable access to urban mobility. Solid waste management perpetuates environmental injustices by locating landfills in peripheral areas inhabited by socioeconomically vulnerable populations. Green areas, rather than promoting inclusion, frequently drive real estate appreciation and the displacement of specific segments of the population. Conclusion: Curitiba shares with other Latin American metropolises structural challenges related to the commodification of urban space, which fosters gentrification processes. Contribution: This study contributes to the debate on urban planning and helps demystify the narratives that position Curitiba as a model of sustainable urbanism by exposing its contradictions.
