Abstract

The theme of this article is Brazilian socioeconomic development from the standpoint of the smart cities projects. Its main objective is to comprehend the limits and possibilities offered by such projects to the socioeconomic development of the country. To that end, its specific objectives are: to analyze the concept of a smart city through its application; to review the historic aspects of Brazilian economic and urban development; and to critically analyze the application of such projects on the country’s municipalities. The adopted approach method is the lefebvrian dialectic, supported by bibliographic and documental sources. Following this path, it can be observed that the smart cities primarily attend to the interests of big corporations, intensifying urban segregation through digital exclusion and real estate speculation, in addition to ignoring regional diversities and particularities of Brazilian urbanization, so that only with the rescue of collective participation on urban planning and technology usage is it possible to speak of truly smart cities.
