Waters of Assis - SP: a historical overview of the occupation of the Jacu Stream Valley

Abstract

This work analyzes the urban history of Assis, SP, focusing on sanitation and urban waters, especially the Jacu Stream. It seeks to understand how these issues influenced the formation and development of the city, in addition to evaluating the importance of these waters as elements of beautification, hygiene, and health. The research began with a bibliographic and documentary investigation into the formation of the city and its development after the arrival of the railway, analyzing newspapers, City Council minutes, maps, and books. The historical analysis covered the period from 1917 to the present, highlighting key events. The data were transposed onto maps, facilitating chronological understanding. Finally, the information was compiled into a text, elucidating the relationship between the occupation of the valley and its consequences for the city. The results show that the Jacu Stream was crucial in the formation of Assis, being essential for the Jacu watershed. Occupation and lack of planning resulted in significant degradation and challenges in managing stormwater. Drainage works, despite aiming to reduce flooding, did not follow adequate technical standards, exacerbating erosion and landslide problems in the stream.

Possui graduação em História pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho-UNESP (1989), graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho-UNESP (1995), mestrado em Geografia Urbana pela Universidade Federal de Uberlândia-UFU (2001) e doutorado em Urbanismo pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro-UFRJ (2016) e pós doutorado pelo PROURB/UFRJ. Foi professora formadora EAD - bolsista capes da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso e professor adjunto da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso.. Ministrou disciplinas na pós-graduação Lato Sensu em Cidades e Construções Sustentáveis..Líder do Grupo de pesquisa GRAPHITE - Grupo de pesquisa em Cidade História e seus Temas, que abrange extensa gama de processos e relações que se estabelecem no espaço urbano . Pesquisa elementos estruturadores de cidades com ênfase em rodovias e rios, como direcionadores de expansão e ruptura urbana e morfologia urbana . Trabalha com políticas públicas e assessorias em Planos Diretores e Planos Setoriais. Atuou como Diretora de Gestão de Comunicação/Unemat. Foi membro do Conselho de Cultura de Barra do Bugres e da Secretaria de Cultura do Estado de Mato Grosso. Atualmente é docente e pesquisadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu em Mestrado Acadêmico em Arquitetura e Urbanismo do UNIVAG (Centro Universitário de Várzea Grande/MT), em parceria com a Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (PUC-Campinas), como também professora e pesquisadora na Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do UNIVAG. Integra o Grupo de Pesquisa "Cidade, Sociedade e Paisagem", registrado no CNPq e associado à linha de pesquisa "Desenvolvimento Territorial e Local" no Curso de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo do UNIVAG.
