The present study investigates the impact of environmental damage caused by rock salt mining in the city of Maceió, focusing on the deepening of inequalities and urban socio-spatial segregation. Mining activity, despite contributing to capital accumulation, triggered the expulsion of local communities, resulting in significant consequences for urban development. The research uses a qualitative approach, framing itself as basic, exploratory and explanatory research, employing bibliographic and documentary research procedures in a specific case study. The central research question is: "What is the impact of environmental damage caused by rock salt mining on the deepening of inequalities and urban socio-spatial segregation in Maceió, considering the expulsion of local populations and the consequences for future urban development?" The study aims to analyze the implications of environmental damage on exacerbated socio-spatial inequality, evaluate the potential impact of recovery actions in areas affected by public authorities and highlight the importance of socializing surplus capital as a fundamental approach to dealing with the resulting challenges. the relationship between capitalism, urbanization and socio-spatial inequality in contemporary cities. The results of this study offer valuable insights for understanding urban dynamics in cities affected by economic activities that cause significant environmental damage, contributing to a more informed debate on urban and environmental policies.
