The paper aims to investigates the relationship between “race” and authoritarianism in Brazil through the notion of “idealism” in the work of Oliveira Viana. For this, the method use was to investigate the author’s work, whose the text discusses the place that Viana occupies in the institution of the “people” as an object of science. In particular, it observes what kind of relationship between race, history and politics Viana establishes through his notion of the Brazilian “type”. Subsequently, the paper addresses how the notion of “idealism” strategically appears in Viana's work to deal with the dilemmas of whiteness in the post-abolition period. Thus, the results reveals how the ideal and real binomial is a long-lasting structure of Brazilian social thought, continuously linked to the White fear of Black citizenship. As the contribution, the paper argues that the critique of racism in Oliveira Viana's work reveals how “race” structures authoritarianism in Brazil and, at the same time, it is removed from the hegemonic political critique.
