ABSTRACT: This study aims at understanding the experience of homosexual men in relation to prejudice and discrimination. We conducted semi-structured individual interviews with seven homosexual men. The data were organized according to the phenomenological perspective and analyzed from the Social Identity Theory. The results demonstrate that all respondents take on a daily attitude of concealment of a homo as a strategy for social interaction with heterosexuals. That strategy is combined with social differentiation processes related to the heterosexual group and to the group, identified by them as effeminate. In the context of these intergroup relations, respondents negotiate their identity references from their daily homo experience and the social expectations related to more traditional patterns of masculinity.
