1. Citing Refrences in Text

a) In case of one work by one-author, the surname of the author and the year of publication must be inserted in the text at the appropriate point:

In text: (Allport, 1924); Allport (1924)

In references: Allport, F. (1924). Social Psychology. Boston: Houghton Miffin.

b) When a work has two authors, cite both names every time the reference occurs in text.

In text: Berger and Luckmann (1966); (Berger & Luckmann, 1966)

In references: Berger, P., & Luckmann, T. (1966). A construção social da realidade. Petrópolis: Vozes.

c) When a work has three, four, or five authors, cite all authors the first time the reference occurs; in subsequent citations, include only the surname of the first author followed by et al. In references, register all the authors.

In text: -First citation: Sá, Souto and Moller (1993); (Sá, Souto & Moller, 1993)

-Subsequent first citation: Sá et al. (1993); (Sá et al., 1993)

In references: Sá, C. P., Souto, S. O., & Moller, R. C. (1993). Socialização do saber acadêmico: um estudo sobre a vulgarização do conhecimento científico. Psicologia & práticas sociais, 1 (2) , 23-29.

d) When a work has six or more authors, cite only the surname of the first author followed by et al. In references, register all the authors.

In text: Oliveira et al. (2004)

In references: Oliveira, D. C., Martins, I. S.,  Fischer, F. M., Sá, C. P., Gomes, A. M. T., &  Marques, S. C. (2004). Pedagogia, futuro e liberdade: a instituição escolar representada por professores, pais e alunos. Psicologia: Teoria e Prática, Ed.esp, pp. 31-47.

e) Identify works by the same author (or by the same two or more authors in the same order) with the same publication date by the suffixes a, b, c and so forth, after the year. In references, they must appear in the same order.

In text: Moscovici (1993a); Moscovici (1993b); Moscovici (1993a, 1993b)

In references: Moscovici, S. (1993a). The return of the unconscious. Social Research, 60, 39-93.

- Moscovici, S. (1993b). Introductory Address. Papers on Social Representations, 2, 160-170.

f) For works accepted for publication but not yet published, use the expression "in press", both in text citations and in references.

g) To cite a specific part of a source, indicate the specific page citation.

Examples:

- Confusing this issue is the overlapping nature of roles in palliative care, whereby "medical needs are met by those in the medical disciplines; nonmedical needs may be addressed by anyone on the team" (Csikai & Chaitin, 2006, p. 112).

- "They are studying, from an evolutionary perspective, to what extent play is a luxury that can be dispensed with when there are too many other competing claims on the growing brain..." (Hening, 2008, pp. 40-41).

h) Order the citation of two or more works within the same parentheses alphabetically in the same order in wich they appear in the reference list.

Example: (Moscovici, 1984; Flament & Rouquette, 2003)

- Arrange two or more works by the same authors (in the same order) by year of publication

Example: (Rouquette, 1994, 1996)

i) Give the secondary source in the reference list; in text, name the original work and give a citation for the secondary source. For example, if Allport´s work is cited in Nicholson and you did not read Allport´s work, list the Nicholson reference in the reference list. In the text, use the expression as cited in:

Example: Allport´s diary (as cited in Nicholson, 2003)

j) Personal communications are not included in the reference list; cite them in text only. Give the initials as well as the surname of the communicator, and provide as exact data as possible.

Example: T. K. Lutes (personal communication, April 18, 2001).

k) Institutional authorship (corporations, associations, government)

In text: - First citation: United States Sentencing Comission (2002)

III. Manuscript Presentation and Submission

Manuscript submission must be made only through the electronic system (SEER) of the Journal Psychology and Social Knowing, in the item "Submissions".

The manuscripts may be written in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French, or eventually another language, at the discretion of the Editorial Team.

At the time of submission, the authors must transfer three different files, in the format of text processing software WORD 2003 or later: (1) the manuscript itself; (2) a presentation page; (3) the figures, tables and/or graphs (if it is the case).

Manuscript text (1st file)

The article must be typed in font Arial, size 11, with 1.5 spacing between the lines, in A4 paper, with the four margins of 2.5 cm, and 1.25 cm paragraphs with justified alignment. The whole text, including abstracts, references, figures, tables and graphs must have the maximum limit of pages settled for the differentes types of texts.

We call authors' attention to remove from the manuscript text any kind of identification other than the ones already included in File 2 (Presentation Page).

The text must contain only the title, the abstract and keywords (5) in the chosen language and in English, followed by the article text.

The abstracts in the chosen language and in English, with a maximum of 250 words, must be placed after the respective titles.

The keywords in the chosen language and in English - 5 - must be inserted after the respective abstracts.

The article consisting in a report of empirical research must be presented, preferably, with the following main sections: introduction, method, results, discussion and conclusions.

The titles of the main section according to which an article is organized must be typed in bold. If it is necessary to subdivide the section, the titles of the subsections must be typed in italics. For example: Method (main section); Data collection (section subdivision).

Notes, when existing, must be numbered, succinct and presented at the end of the text, in font size 10, simple and without paragraph indenting. The "Insert Notes" resource from Word must not be used.

Presentation page (2nd file)

The presentation page must contain: the titles (in the original language and in English); full name(s) of the author(s), respective institutional affiliations, academic titles, complete mailing addresses, telephone and e-mail of the first author.

The titles in the chosen language and in English must contain no more than 20 words.

The institutional affiliation must contain the full names of the institution and of the department or postgraduate programs in which the authors acts, with city and country.

After that, if the work that originated the article was financed or supported by a funding agency, its name must be indicated.

Tables, graphs and figures (3rd file)

Figures, tables and graphs must be built according to APA norms. The document might have up to 6 figures, tables and graphs, with their respective titles and possible subtitles.

The figures, tables and graphs must be sent in black and white, in a single file separate from text, one per page.

Tables and graphs must be made in .XLS (Excel) format and pasted in a Word file, while the figures must be images pasted in Word.

The locations in which each figure, table or graph should be inserted must be signaled in the text. Example: "INSERT TABLE 1".

Empirical Studies

Report of original research with primary or secondary data sources. Its structure reflects the stages of the investigation process and are presented in the following order: introduction (development of the problem with a review of relevant empirical literature and presentation of the investigation aims); method (description of participants, instruments, and procedures employed for the conduction of the research); results (report of findings and analyses); and discussion (results summary, interpretation and implications). This type of contribution is limited to 30 pages, including abstracts, figures, tables and references.

Literature Review

Systematic review or meta-analysis of published material about a particular subject, through clear methodological procedures. The aim of this type of contribution is to update authors on previously published material, considering the process of research and seeking to clarify a specific problem. It is expected that authors: (a) clearly define a problem; (b) summarize previous investigations to inform the reader about the state of research; (c) identity relationships, contradictions, blanks and/or inconsistencies in the literature; and (d) suggest the next investigation steps for the resolution of the identified problems. There is not a predefined section structure for this type of contribution, so that the authors must seek a coherent format for the text. It is essential that there is an organizing argument rather than a mere compilation of past studies. This type of contribution is limited to 30 pages including abstracts, figures, tables and references.

Theoretical Article

Work based on the current theoretical and empirical literature to propose conceptual and theoretical advances. It is expected that authors present the development of a scientific area to be expanded or refine theoretical constructs, present a new theory or analyze an existing theory, presenting its weaknesses or demonstrating the edge of a theory over another. Usually the authors of contributions of this kind analyze the internal consistency of a theory, as well as its external validity. The sections may vary as way to seek consistency. It is essential that there is a propositional element in the text. This type of contribution is limited to 30 pages, including abstracts, figures, tables and references.

Methodological Article

It is the discussion about new methodological approaches, improvement of existing methods or discussions about data analytical approaches to the scientific community. The use of empirical data, in this case, serves only as an illustration of the data analysis technique. This type of contribution is limited to 20 pages, including abstracts, figures, tables and references.

Book review

Critical review of a recently published work (maximum 2 years), guiding the reader in terms of its characteristics and potential uses. It is essential that it is not only a summary or review of the chapters of the work, but actually a critique. This type of contribution is limited to 4 pages including all of its elements. It must present a title in the original language and in English, as well as the complete reference of the reviewed book right below the title. There is no Abstract.
