Abstract

This paper intends to analyze, through a narrative literature review, the way in which parental beliefs influence the grieving process of symbolic grief when faced with the realization that their child has some type of disability or condition that escapes the standards of development expected by society. Considering the importance of parents in the psychic constitution of the child in question, the concept of normality was studied and how it interferes in the elaboration of this symbolic loss. The findings indicate that, if the child's particularity generates family anguish, this can trigger conflicts that harm the family's health and the viability of the child's personal growth and adaptation. It is believed that this work can contribute to the understand the diferences as a component of individuality, refuting discrimination and social prejudice in relation to these individuals. Therefore, it is expected to enable an improvement in the quality of life of these families.
