Abstract

This work aims to study the most recurrent knowledge management and technology transfer practices in technology-based firms (NTBFs) originating in academic laboratories. It is estimated in this study an importance scale attributed by the entrepreneurs to these two different aspects, what distinguish them in the environment analyzed. It is intended to examine the reasons for the use of knowledge management practices in these research spin-offs and their qualitative results. A previous literature review enabled the understanding of the background of the problem, as well as assisting in the elaboration of a data-collection instrument. Later, there was an exploratory study on some NTBFs, incubated or graduated on business incubators in the Network of Incubators, Technology Parks and Centers of Rio de Janeiro (REINC). In this context, semi-structured interviews were conducted in selected companies in order to obtain evidence that both the knowledge management in such organizations and the scientific knowledge transfer towards or from them are critical factors to their success.

Keywords: Technology-based firms. Spin-offs. Business incubator. Technology transfer. Knowledge management.
