Abstract

Low performance at school is one of the main reasons for referral of children to the public health system and clinical psychology school. Studies suggest that the prevalence of mental health problems is higher in children with underachievement than in the general population, such as hyperactivity and inattention, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, separation anxiety, generalized anxiety and specific phobia. Most of these children have a prior history of different health treatments and many make use of psychotropic medication. The aim of the present study is to discuss when underachievement is no longer only a school problem and becomes a problem that belongs to mental health services.

Keywords: underachievement; mental health; child.
