O horror da “Carne”, de Mariana Enriquez

Abstract

Since 1995, with the production of her first novel, Mariana Enriquez has been gaining more and more ground on the literary scene with narratives that range from the fantastic to the grotesque, from horror to social denunciation. The aim of this paper is to analyze the short story “Carne”, from Os perigos de fumar na cama (The dangers of smoking in bed) (2009), considering three research perspectives: that of fantastic and horror literature, that of ritual processes and that of the double in literature. To this end, with regard to the traditional and contemporary fantastic, I use Todorov (2004) and Gama-Khalil (2013) and Riera (2024) as my main theoretical basis; for reflections on the gothic and horror, I mobilize the studies of Nestarez (2022). From the point of view of the ritual process, Turner (1974, 2008) is the theoretical contribution, and on the double in literature, Santos (2009) establishes this role.
