The portrait of old age in women's writing in Júlia Lopes de Almeida

Considering the relevance of studying the female condition in its various aspects, this work aims to analyze the portrayal of female aging in nineteenth-century Brazilian society in two short stories by Júlia Lopes de Almeida: "The Death of the Old Woman" and "The Three Sisters." To this end, we draw on studies on the situation of women, especially those by Simone de Beauvoir (2018), Michelle Perrot (2007), and Mary del Priore (2011). Furthermore, since Almeida's literature has been considered Gothic in recent studies, we observe how the concepts of this aesthetic can be applied to the analysis through the conceptualization of Júlio França (2022) and Fred Botting (2024). Finally, we find that the aging of women is transformed into a fear that is then portrayed in female Gothic literature as a reflection of the social view of this process.
