Listening to the drum cry: a brief study of Carlos de Assumpção’s poetry

ABSTRACT:
The main objective of this article is to make a brief study of the poetry of Carlos de Assumpção (1927). Due to the work of professor and poet Alberto Pucheu, who organized and wrote the afterword of the publication that brought together Assumpção's poems in I won’t stop screaming (São Paulo: Companhia das Letras, 2020), more readers got to know the poet's work. The poems selected to be analysed in this article deal with the themes of racial prejudice and cultural values connected to ancestry through the image of the drum, a musical instrument which reflects the struggle of black people. Therefore, the analytical work sought references on studies carried out by Roland Barthes (1990), Marshall McLuhan (1972), Walter Benjamin (1994) e Frantz Fanon (2008).
