Conceição Evaristo's short story “Maria” (2016) describes the life of a black, poor, working-class woman in Brazil. The short story explores the harsh daily reality of Maria, who confronts exhaustion and marginalization as she struggles to provide for her children. This paper aims to investigate the symbolic questions in Conceição Evaristo's short story “Maria” (2016) from a materialist perspective. In order to complete this objective, a bibliographical research was developed using a qualitative approach of the exploratory bibliographical type in the context of materialist concepts, based on authors such as Cevasco (2013), Cândido (1980), Eagleton (2017), and others. In summary, the story reveals how material and social conditions shape the Maria’s life, highlighting marginalization and the struggle for survival in society.
