“The emotion of sadness, the pleasure of sadness” in Wada Kyûtarô, or an aesthetic elaborated in prison writings

The text attempts to investigate the developments and aesthetic applications made by Wada Kyûtarô (1893-1928) in what he called “the emotion of sadness, the pleasure of sadness” in From the prison windows (Gokusô kara, 1927). Wada was a Japanese haiku composer who, after abandoning his literary desires, turned to radical and direct political action. In this context, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and forced labor for attempting the life of a high-ranking military officer in 1924. While in prison, he returned to writing haiku and tanka, as well as letters, essays, and other similar texts. As an argumentative proposal, it is suggested that Wada, through the articulation of his concept, is refining aesthetic conceptions and positions that will influence both his poetics of imprisonment and his ontological conception.
