The main goal of this article is to identify the mother figure present in the six novels written by Jane Austen, with the aim of linking it to the author’s own mother, Cassandra Austen. For this purpose, a brief biography of Cassandra was provided, along with possible inferences about her relationship with her daughter. Furthermore, characteristics of this relationship in Austen’s work were examined to determine what these maternal figures have to offer their daughters as a role model. The postulates of Comparative Literature were adopted as the theoretical line of thought, as they may relate literary works with events in the life of their author. It was possible to conclude that maternal figures in Austen’s narrative are not perfect, but rather a product of social expectations.
