O presente trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar como Frances E. W.
Harper, através de seu romance Iola Leroy, or, Shadows Uplifted, faz uso do tema
Maternidade. Abordando o assunto, a escritora afro-americana, do século XIX, logra
destruir por completo as crenças racistas em relação às mulheres negras, definidas de
forma perversa dentro do contexto da escravidão. Ademais, é intenção desta pesquisa
evidenciar como a narrativa de Frances Harper é uma tentativa de retratar a maternidade
como ferramenta crucial para o levante da comunidade negra, principalmente de sua
parcela feminina, multiplamente subjugada.
