The subject of this article is the novel God Help the Child (2015) by Toni Morrison. Morrison is known for tackling complex issues in her works, interweaving race, class and gender. She is also known for thematising child abuse and trauma in various spheres. The research aims to investigate the effects of childhood trauma, addressing issues such as colourism, racism and maternal neglect, on the trajectory of the character Bride. The analysis of childhood trauma will be divided into three main scopes: its effects on the construction of identity, the impact on memory and the process of acceptance of the character. To do this, we draw on theories about Otherness (Kilomba, 2019; Civila, 2020), colourism (Hunter, 2007), memory (Ricoeur, 2007) and trauma (Herman, 1992). It was thereby possible to recognise that Morrison's novel is representative of the effects of childhood trauma and the attempt to overcome it.
