Genre analysis opinion article in the textbook in the light of the critical analysis of genres: reflections to teaching

The article sought to investigate how the teaching of the textual genre "opinion article" is proposed in the textbook "Geração Alpha Língua Portuguesa: Ensino Fundamental do 9º Ano," authored by Everaldo Nogueira, Greta Marchetti, and Mirela Cleto (2018). Based on the critical analysis of genres, we examined whether the methods proposed for teaching this genre in the aforementioned textbook are presented in a critical and reflective manner. For this purpose, this research is grounded in the theoretical framework of genre analysis by Bakhtin (1997), primarily drawing on the contributions of critical discourse analysis, such as those by Jonh Swales (1990), Bawarshi and Reiff (2013), and Bezerra (2012), which are guided by rhetorical and sociorhetorical analysis, as well as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This strengthens arguments around effective teaching of the genre and its cognitive skills or abilities (BNCC, 2018). We conclude that the approach in the analyzed textbook is not sufficient for the teaching-learning process of genres, specifically the opinion article genre.
